After following the San Miguel River -one of the last wild rivers in the West- downstream through the red rock walls of its canyon, the Tabeguache/Unaweep Scenic Byway (Highway 145) takes drivers up Norwood Hill to the big sky terrain of Wrights Mesa. The mesa is home to historic ranches which started with the settlement of the mesa by Edwin Joseph in 1879, and led to Norwood's incorporation in 1905.
Positioned between desert and alpine terrain, Norwood's abundance of outdoor opportunities, mild climate and relaxed atmosphere make it one of southwestern Colorado's best kept secrets. Equestrian and agricultural heritages are deeply interwoven in the fabric of life for Norwood's residents. Cattle drives and cowboys are still common spring and fall sightings in this ranching community that last July, hosted the largest money rodeo in the Colorado Pro Rodeo Association circuit. This year, several other equestrian events are planned including a Ranch Rodeo and Chili Cook-Off as well as high-speed track action at the San Miguel Basin Horse Races. Horseback riding enthusiasts ride year-round in Norwood's mild climate, whether enjoying the sweet smell of spring fruit blossoms, the abundant wildlife of summer, the harvest delights of fall or the golden and bald eagle residents of winter. Norwood's heritage takes center stage in September, when locals adore their Pioneer Days celebration that honors long-term, local residents with a parade, a traditional feast, and old-time children's games. With the San Miguel River, the Uncompahgre Plateau, Lone Cone Mountain, Miramonte Reservoir and acres of public land just minutes away, recreation opportunities abound for fishing, boating, ATV riding, ice fishing and any other pursuit that takes advantage of the terrain around Norwood.
