WHAT'S IN A GOOD SKI LESSON?
Written By: Edgar "Marty" Wilcox, III

For each individual, the qualities of a good ski lesson may be different. Some simply want a friend to ski with or show them more of the mountain. Others want to work on technique so they become more efficient. Maybe there’s a bit of incentive to catch-up or keep-up with the gang. Perhaps we want a combination of understanding the sport better while being pushed. Whatever the motivation, the bottom line is RESULTS!
Telluride ski instructors realize that everyone's lesson plan is unique. However, there are some elements all skiers can employ and share that will get them closer to their desired outcome. Probably the number one factor for anyone’s learning is to create a relationship with the instructor. Be honest about your goals and allow yourself to become friends. After all, the information we need to better our skiing is in any public library. Having someone we trust recognize how we learn as individuals will take us further than any canned presentation. Your Telluride ski teacher has a wealth of knowledge that they will use within their lesson plan. Some info may be mechanical or technical however, the instructor will relate it in simple “lay” terms.
To facilitate progress, an instructor will recognize what the student does to stay in balance. Are your actions natural or contrived? Is that equipment set-up for your skill level? Do you understand that skiing requires a blending of your body’s mechanics to be successful? Have you been selecting the proper terrain for your person development? All of these elements and more can be considered and addressed in just a few runs by Telluride’s well-trained staff.
Like their students, each instructor is different. If you enjoy your skiing guide, hang on to them. Chances are it isn't the information your favorite teacher possesses, it’s how they relate it to you. While in your lesson, you should always feel safe and not threatened. You should be having a fun time that is stimulating physically and mentally. Your instructor should be a total professional--timely, friendly, and knowledgeable. The Telluride Ski School is always ready to share their passion for the sport with their friends. They know that when it comes to a great ski lesson, it’s all about YOU!
